Minimizing Forever Chemicals

Forever chemicals, also known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are a group of human-made chemicals that have been widely used in various industries since the 1940s. These chemicals are renowned for their persistence in the environment and adverse health effects.
Minimizing the use and impact of forever chemicals is crucial for protecting our health and our family's health. This week I took a small step by changing out my tissue paper to organic bamboo. Who knew tissue paper had PFAs?
Here are some strategies to consider:

1. Avoiding Unnecessary Use

One of the most effective ways to minimize forever chemicals is to avoid their unnecessary use. Evaluate the products you use and consider alternatives that do not contain PFAS. Look for labels that explicitly state 'PFAS-free' or 'no forever chemicals.' Some items that contain PFAs are:
  • Cleaning products.
  • Water-resistant fabrics, such as rain jackets, umbrellas, and tents.
  • Grease-resistant paper.
  • Tissue Paper
  • Personal care products, like shampoo, dental floss, nail polish, and eye makeup.
  • Stain-resistant coatings used on carpets, upholstery, and other fabrics.

2. Proper Disposal

When it comes to getting rid of products containing forever chemicals, proper disposal is essential. Do not throw them in the regular trash or down the drain. Instead, follow local regulations for hazardous waste disposal. This ensures that the chemicals do not end up in landfills or water sources.

3. Water Filtration

Investing in a high-quality water filtration system can help remove forever chemicals from your drinking water. Look for filters that specifically target PFAS compounds. This ensures that you and your family are not exposed to these chemicals through contaminated water sources.
Though we may not be able to remove PFAs from our lives completely, we can take small steps to minimize them in our daily lives.
